Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, Brazil

Founded in 1837 by a select group of Portuguese living in Rio de Janeiro, the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura is today, in all Latin America, the oldest library created by emigrants functioning, without interruption, for almost 180 years. Being since the beginning worried with enduing the house of a precious collection, its directors did not forget newspapers and magazines, which would occupy a significant part of its records – in particular during the 19th century. Within the efforts to preserve and give visibility to its collections of periodicals, inexhaustible source of multidisciplinary researches, it is worth to highlight the successful project “O Real em Revista” (The Real in Review), supported by Petrobras and developed between Jan. 2014 and July 2015. The good impact of such project has given impulse to new projects centered in its collections of periodicals, as well as to plans of cooperation with other similar institutions.

Gilda Santos is graduated, MA and PhD by the Faculty of Letters of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where has lectured Portuguese Literature 1975 -2006). Created, in 1999, the Chair Jorge de Sena for Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and headed it until 2006. As a Researcher of the Brazilian CNPq – National Council for Scientic and Technological Development (1992-2006). Was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California / Santa Bárbara anda t the Portuguese National Library (2005). Participates as Guest-Researcher at the Centre for Literatures of Portuguese Expression(CLEPUL) and at CREPAL – Centre de recherches sur les pays lusophones, of Univ. Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III. As Vice-President and Head of the Centre of Studies of the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura was the editor of the review Convergência Lusíada (1992-2007) and created, in 2001, the Luso-Brazilian Research Group (PPLB),being its General-Coordinator and, as such being responsible for many activities and projects that promote the Luso-Brazilian dialog. In Brazil and internationally, participated of inumerous scientific encounters, published papers, organized events, edited reviews and books. In addition is a member of the editorial board of several academic reviews in the field of Letters.  For her role as the head of the site “Ler Jorge de Sena” (created in 2010), recieved the Prize Jorge de Sena/ 2014″, managed by the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon’s University. Was warded by the Portuguese Government with the Comenda da Ordem do Mérito (1997), the Medalha de Mérito das Comunidades Portuguesas(2004) and the Medalha do Mérito Cultural (2016).
